MOVE OVER COMICS...HOLLYWOOD COMING THOUGH
So I've been trying to find out all of the cool stuff that is going to be happening at SDCC this year and the only information I am able to find is about what Hollywood is bringing to the show.
I keep on reading about how this studio's booth is going to be 40' x 75' and how this studio's booth is going to be 2 floors and this studio's booth will sing and dance and that studio's booth will cure cancer and all of that crap (okay I made up the bit about how they said it was going to be 2 floors….)
Then I talk to a couple of fairly successful comic book publishers who are saying this is their last show or I have talked to some excellent creators who are like "I'm not going to SDCC any more…it's not worth the hassle"
I'm also seeing more and more articles written by these "entertainment bloggers" who are talking about Comic Con like they know about the show…bitch please!!!! You are the same people four years ago that wrote about how in July all the of the geeks and nerds come to San Diego for a big geek-fest and to stay far away….now you're writing about how it is the "IT" place and how this is the place to be seen and to have your product displayed.
I just wish the convention organizers would grow some frackin balls and not let Hollywood come in and change how things are done and how the show is run. Don't get me wrong…the people who do the SDCC are amazing people and they work their asses off!!! But those are the people on the ground floor…the "grunts" of the show…I'm more frustrated at the "higher ups".
They sit there and say the show is sold out and there is no room for additional booths on the floor…the first people to get cut are the comic book people. Imagine that! The comic book people get cut from something that the public knows as COMIC CON! They keep on cutting out smaller publishers so they can put in another million square foot movie studio booth or video game company.
I mean why have they not put a cap on how many booths these NON Comic related items can have? I've been going to the show for quite awhile now and Independent Pavilion has pretty much been the same size and in the same spot for the past 8 years. It hosts some of the best and most innovating independent publishers around…so why not increase the size of it? Why not place newer companies in these sections….why not try and cultivate and help grow the comic book presence at the COMIC BOOK SHOW!?
I'm just saying as much as I love Hollywood coming to the show…they are coming to Comic Con because they now see the value of what the fans and attendees of the show (the ones who have been going pre-2005) have known all along. It's kind of like that girl in high school who totally didn't want to talk to you because you were a nerd and then at the 10 year reunion she totally wants you because you now have money…make 'em jump through some hoops to get next to yah!
I'm still going to go every year because I love it…but as soon as I hear they are holding American Idol tryouts at the show…I'm canceling my trip!
