SOME SIMPLE GUIDLINES FOR SDCC 2009 TALENT SEARCH

So here are some simple rules/guidelines to follow if you are coming to the SDCC 2009 Talent Search. If you haven't already looked at my 5 Tips for a successful portfolio review and my previous Asylum bit about portfolio reviews I would highly suggest you do...and then read on!

  1. Again I've said this over and over and over in my previous tips on portfolio reviews. Get yourself a portfolio!!! It just makes it easier for the editor (that's me) to go through your pages and see what you have to offer. It also limits you to how many pieces you can have in your portfolio (which is a good thing!)

  2. Remember this is a job interview….that means conduct yourself in a business manner. There will be plenty of time after you impress me with your talents for us to be casual and have fun and joke around but first introductions should be kept professional. I'll be professional so should you!

  3. We are looking for people to work in the comic book industry…that means if you are contributing to the visual side of business, know your business. If you don't have sequential samples of your work we're not going to be able to give you much of a critique. So make sure you have sequential pieces, bottom line! I'm sure there are plenty of find cover artist out there but right now we're more interested in some one who can do the interiors of the books and not just the covers.

  4. Have a leave behind of your work. I'm going to be seeing a ton of portfolios in a very short period of time. If you don't give me something to look at later when my head is a little more clear and with my other editors then I can't guarantee that I'm even going to remember your work. It doesn't take much to make some photocopies of your work, label it and staple it together. Heck here is even the link to the local Kinko's by the convention center so you can make your leave behinds.

  5. We are going to be working with some great Comic Con volunteers and we are very grateful for these people. Committed Comics is also going to have one of our people at the booth as well. If either of these people say; "That's it" then that is it. Don't push your luck by saying you have the greatest thing since sliced bread and I have to look at it. They are not only saying that's it because of the time but it also has to do with the stress level of myself. I'm giving over 8 hour of my time…and at the end of the day I just want to go and get something to drink, don't make me beat you!
